Prevention & Diversion Program

Need help ?

FPGROC can provide one month’s rent or a security deposit to assist a family with avoiding eviction or diverting shelter. Eligible families:

  1. Have children 18 years of age or younger in your care.

  2. Be able to prove your ability to maintain the rent going forward.

  3. Have a total rent balance that does not exceed the amount that we are willing, by policy, to provide to a given household (approximately one month’s rent).

  4. Need assistance for a security deposit not exceeding the amount we are willing, by policy, to provide to a given household.

About the program

The Prevention & Diversion Program provides funding assistance to prevent a family from homelessness or eviction, or a security deposit to divert a family from entering shelter; case management services are provided to ensure they remain stably housed for up to one year.

  • A low-barrier* program that started in 2019, the Prevention & Diversion Program has assisted over 393 families, including nearly 811 children, as of May 2023.

  • The average monthly rent for a two-bedroom in the city of Rochester is $950. For comparison, the average cost per Shelter Program family per average length of stay in 2022 was $1,438.20 - preventing eviction is both more cost-effective and less traumatic than shelter.

  • The need for eviction prevention in Rochester far exceeds the available resources in the community. FPGROC has funding to fulfill approximately 4% of the total requests received. In 2022, 4% of total requests = 104 families.

*Low-barrier support from FPGROC’s program means excessive documentation (including an eviction notice) is NOT required to qualify. Families who cannot be served are referred to other community resources.
